How do you structure a college essay?

  1. Chronological: Your writing should move forward with time, highlighting different moments in your life in the order that they happened. If writing about physics, you might include what you learned as a kid, sophomore year, and last summer. If writing about swim teams, you might start at the beginning of the season and build to the pinnacle championship meet.
  2. Montage: Each paragraph has a distinct idea that fits within the larger theme of the essay. If you study film, you might organize the essay with a different film and life lesson for each paragraph. If you write about cooking, each paragraph could be a different food or course of a meal. The montage essay uses an overarching theme as the “glue” of all the individual paragraphs that come together to tell one larger reflection from your life.
